Executed in the intricate visual language associated with Bali's Batuan painting tradition, the compositions are densely populated with figures, animals, lush vegetation and dramatic mythological imagery. Fine linear detail and tightly layered scenes invite close viewing, while the predominantly earthy monochromatic palette lends the works an atmospheric, almost otherworldly quality.

Batuan painting emerged as a recognized Balinese school during the 1930s and became particularly known for complex, densely composed narrative imagery encompassing mythology, spirituality, ritual and everyday Balinese life.

The frames are an important decorative component of the pair. Deeply carved openwork wood surrounds each image with scrolling floral and foliate ornament, extending the visual intricacy of the paintings themselves. Traditional Balinese paintings are frequently presented in carved wood frames, and documented Batuan examples survive in their indigenous hand-carved frames.
