Willingdon served as Governor of Bombay (1913–1918) and later as Governor of Madras (1919–1924), where he gained a reputation for fostering social reforms and education initiatives. His diplomatic skills led him to become the Viceroy of India (1931–1936) during a period of significant unrest, where he navigated the complexities of India’s push for independence. Known for his dedication to British-Indian relations, he was also the Governor General of Canada (1926–1931), where he advocated for closer ties within the Commonwealth.
