Vertical plank siding is arranged in an overlapping, stepped pattern across the gable ends, topped with a pitched roof of terracotta-red asphalt shingles. Rounded wooden pegs project from the ends of the planks, lending a hand-hewn, rustic character, while hand-driven iron nails (now oxidized to a warm rust) add to its authentic, one-of-a-kind charm.

Contrasting reddish entry surrounds frame the round 1 3/4" diameter bird openings. The rectangular "front door" is decorative and nailed shut. The sun-faded blue paint and gentle weathering are original to the piece and very much part of its appeal.

This birdhouse was used for decades in an estate on Lake Champlain in Northern Vermont and served as a home to generations of birds. Its shingled roof and solid build means it could easily be used again as a functional birdhouse. It could also serve as a decorative accent for a garden room, porch, potting shed, sunroom, or shelf.
