Handcrafted from solid wood, the cabinet combines an exceptionally decorative façade with the specialized organization traditionally required by a herbalist or apothecary.

Measuring approximately 41 inches high by 30 inches wide by 11 inches deep, the cabinet has an impressive architectural presence while retaining a relatively shallow profile. Its proportions make it especially well suited for placement in an entryway, dining room, study, library, collector’s room or other space where distinctive storage and visual impact are desired.

The cabinet contains 39 drawers in total: 35 small medicine drawers arranged in seven vertical rows, together with four wider drawers positioned across the upper portion. Each drawer retains its metal ring pull and hand-painted Hanja characters identifying traditional herbal ingredients and medicinal substances. Recognizable labels include longan, safflower, Chinese skullcap root, schizonepeta, costus root, akebia stem, atractylodes, saposhnikovia root, cinnamon bark and frankincense.

Although the inscriptions employ Chinese characters, their presence is fully consistent with Korean origin. Known in Korea as Hanja, Chinese characters were historically used for scholarship, prescriptions and traditional herbal-medicine terminology. Korean yakjang medicine cabinets were therefore commonly labeled in Hanja rather than Hangul, the native Korean alphabet.

Large storage compartments are incorporated above and below the extensive central bank of drawers. Each compartment is fitted with an ingenious four-panel door assembly. The doors are joined by center hinges and travel and slide along the runners within the cabinet’s fitted framework, allowing them to fold and slide for convenient access. The complete door assemblies may also be removed from their tracks, creating broad, unobstructed access to the storage interiors. This fully removable construction is intentional.

The cabinet is richly embellished with an unusually extensive collection of aged metal fittings. Prominent butterfly-form lock plates appear at the center of both the upper and lower compartments, accompanied by butterfly-shaped hinges, floral-form mounts and circular ring handles. Butterflies traditionally symbolize happiness, beauty, longevity and marital harmony in Korean decorative arts. The warm, time-softened metal contrasts beautifully with the dark-stained cabinet and the more prominently grained drawer fronts.

Traditional solid-wood construction is visible throughout. The drawers have solid-board bottoms, rough-finished secondary surfaces, simple nailed and pegged joints, and individually fitted components. Protected areas display accumulated oxidation, staining, shrinkage and surface variation consistent with considerable age. No particleboard, MDF, modern drawer slides or other composite case materials are evident.

The cabinet retains a warm, naturally aged patina with visible wood grain, color variation and evidence of historic use. Scattered rubs, finish wear, minor edge losses, small areas of wood loss, checking around natural knots, interior marks and oxidation to the metal fittings are present. These characteristics are consistent with an older handcrafted utilitarian cabinet and contribute to its authentic character. The removable upper and lower folding/sliding door assemblies fit within their respective openings, and the visible drawers, ring pulls and decorative fittings are substantially complete. More than a storage cabinet, this Korean yakjang is an evocative artifact of traditional herbal-medicine culture. Its unusually extensive 39-drawer configuration, individual Hanja labels, elaborate butterfly hardware, removable folding-door system, substantial size and richly aged surface make it an exceptional statement piece for an Asian antiques collection or thoughtfully layered interior.
