A crisp architectural study from the Southwest volumes of The North American Indian, this photogravure depicts the terraced stone and adobe houses of Laguna Pueblo, photographed in 1925 and published in 1926 in Volume XVI, the installment devoted to the Tiwa and Keres pueblos of New Mexico.
Laguna, Kawaik'a in its own Keresan language, sits on the San Jose River about forty-five miles west of Albuquerque and remains one of the largest of the pueblos today. Curtis's camera records the village fabric directly: coursed sandstone walls patched with adobe plaster, viga roof beams projecting at the parapets, and stone retaining walls stepping the houses up the slope. It is Curtis in his documentary register rather than his soft-focus pictorial mode, and the gravure medium renders every course of masonry with engraving-like precision. For anyone drawn to Southwest architecture, adobe interiors, or the pueblos themselves, this is a quietly perfect piece.
This is a vintage impression from the original 1907-1930 publication, printed on Holland Van Gelder wove paper, one of the three papers used for original subscriber sets, per Cardozo Collection and Santa Fe Art Auction cataloging. This is not a 1970s-era restrike; restrikes were printed on modern papers such as Arches and Rives BFK.
Provenance is the strongest available in the Curtis market: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. Cardozo (1948-2021) was the foremost Curtis collector, dealer, and scholar of his generation, author of Sacred Legacy and numerous standard references. This leaf retains its Cardozo inventory number in pencil on the verso.
