This is a monumental 19th-century Italian gilt and gesso overmantel mirror. Its exceptional scale, deeply layered structural composition, and distinctive artistic features place it well above standard accent mirrors. features elegant draped fabric swagging, floral garlands, and structural ribbons, seamlessly combining opulent Rococo movement with stately Neoclassical motifs. This mirror is designed to sit majestically above a fireplace mantle or dominate a grand entryway. Its sheer size multiplies its value, as large statement frames require massive structural reinforcement and are highly sought after for luxury properties. The frame features deep, pierced architectural scrollwork, heavily molded corner cartouches, and acanthus leaf molding at the base. The bright gold finish appears beautifully aged with deep undertones emphasizing the high-relief details.
PLEASE take note of these 2 condition issues:
Upper left crest/urn area (Image 1):
The carved giltwood urn-and-floral crest at the top has visible losses to the gilt/gesso finish — you can see bright white patches (exposed gesso or plaster) breaking through the bronze-gold surface on the florettes and leaf clusters. There also appears to be a chip or break at the tip of one of the scrolling acanthus/foliate elements on the upper right crest, where the wood or composition core shows through and the gilding has flaked away entirely, leaving a raw, lighter-toned patch. Overall this reads as typical age-related gesso loss and chipping at the most delicate, high-relief carved points.
Ribbon/tassel below the cameo face:
Below the oval medallion with the classical profile face, the carved rope-and-tassel drop shows separation damage — the tassel element appears cracked or partially detached at the point where it meets the bottom edge of the medallion, with the carved cord/rope twist looking like it may have a break or old repair line running through it. The gilt finish here is also worn thin, showing the darker underlying material (likely gesso over wood or composition) rather than a clean gold surface.
