A richly detailed pair of vintage Indonesian hand-carved wood wall masks, likely Balinese and believed to depict Rama and Sita, also known as Shinta, the royal couple of the Ramayana.
Designed as companion decorative wall carvings, the two figures share closely related carving, finish, proportions and materials. Both have elongated almond-shaped inset eyes, refined facial features and elaborate pierced royal headdresses.
The male figure is especially sculptural, with a carved moustache and beard, layered floral ornament and mythical serpent or dragon figures emerging from the headdress. The lighter eye, tooth and fang details are inset rather than painted, adding dimension and visual contrast.
The female figure has a calm, elegant expression framed by an intricate openwork headdress with floral and foliate carving and long pendant-like side elements.
Their deep reddish-brown wood finish has developed attractive tonal variation and patina with age. Both retain metal hanging hardware on the reverse. An old handwritten label remains on the male and appears to read “K. $80,” likely an earlier dealer, inventory or price notation.
These were created as decorative wall pieces rather than wearable theatrical masks, but their imagery appears rooted in Indonesian court and theatrical traditions.
