Inspired by the work "La Bacchante au petit faune" realized by Jean-Joseph Foucou (1739-1815) in 1777, this bronze was attributed to Clodion (1738-1814) at the time of its realization, hence the inscription on the base "Bacchante par Clodion - Original Musée du Louvre". It is a cast by Barbedienne also bearing the round stamp "mechanical reproduction A. Colas".
Bacchante, priestess of Bacchus God of drunkenness, is represented with two small fauns. These two mythological creatures half human half goat, surround the young woman. One on her right shoulder, face hidden, holding a bunch of grapes, is dressed with a garland of vine leaves. The other, near her left leg, carries a gourd and a stick.
Bacchante is depicted with a light veil surrounding her hips. She is looking with amusement at the little Faun sitting on her shoulder that she is holding with her hands.
Charming, this sculpture is an ode to youth and celebration.
