A wonderfully expressive pair of vintage hand-carved Philippine wood masks featuring fantastical dragon and demon imagery.

Carved in warm-toned wood with pierced openwork and strongly dimensional features, the two masks make an especially compelling wall display. One depicts an elongated dragon-like creature surrounded by repeated almond-shaped openings and sweeping carved lines. The companion mask has a more sculptural horned face with pointed ears, angular eyes and an exaggerated open mouth framed by dramatic fangs.

The darker example retains an original Alii Woods (Honolulu) “Genuine Monkey Pod” label together with its Made in Philippines label. The horned mask also retains an original Made in Philippines stock label.

Dating to the mid- to late-20th century, likely circa 1960s–1980s, these are decorative Philippine carvings created for the international travel and export market. Their intricate carving, warm patina and graphic silhouettes give them considerable presence despite their relatively compact size.

Especially attractive displayed together as part of an eclectic gallery wall, collected global interior, study, entryway or layered designer installation.
