Born in London, Sullivan spent the majority of her life in the United States and received formal training at the Dayton Art Institute and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. She additionally studied with Pennsylvania Impressionist painter Eliot O'Hara and York, Pennsylvania painter and sculptor Herbert Leopold. Her work was exhibited at the Dayton Art Institute, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Hagerstown Museum of Fine Arts, and in Congressional offices at the United States Capitol. Sullivan later lived and worked in Rockville, Maryland.

This signed original landscape beautifully demonstrates Sullivan's Impressionist approach to the natural world. A tranquil body of water extends toward softly rendered distant mountains beneath an expansive atmospheric sky, while a lush meadow of wildflowers dominates the foreground.

Sullivan creates extraordinary physical dimension through energetic brushwork and substantial passages of impasto, particularly among the orange, ochre, yellow and cream blossoms. The heavily worked foreground gradually gives way to increasingly delicate handling through the water, distant landscape and sky, creating an impressive sense of atmospheric depth.

Small narrative details reward closer inspection: two figures appear within a distant boat while dark birds move across the open landscape.

The painting is signed by Constance Sullivan at lower right and remains housed in its handsome period giltwood frame with linen liner.

Particularly interesting is the regional provenance retained on the reverse. The stretcher bears a period stamp from a Rockville, Maryland framing supplier, consistent with Sullivan's documented residence and artistic activity in Rockville later in her career.

Sullivan's institutional history adds considerably to the work's interest. Her paintings were exhibited at important Mid-Atlantic institutions, and her work is represented in the U.S. Department of State's Art in Embassies collection, which documents her Autumnal Marsh Scene as part of its permanent holdings.

An excellent example of Sullivan's Impressionist landscape painting, combining documented regional history, strong decorative scale and exceptionally tactile handling of paint.

Condition:
Good vintage condition consistent with age. Original painted surface presents beautifully with strong color and substantial intentional impasto throughout. Scattered age-related spotting is visible on the reverse of the canvas and to portions of the linen frame liner. Giltwood frame exhibits expected vintage wear including scattered scuffs, abrasions, patina and small areas of finish loss. No obvious major tears or punctures observed in the supplied photographs.
