The mane … Read more Great 1960s Brutalist horse head sculpture, handmade from cut, shaped and welded copper with a wonderful aged patina. The mane is especially fun, made from individually worked pieces of copper that give it a lot of movement and character.

The design is reminiscent of the Brutalist horse sculptures associated with Willem de Groot, although this piece is unsigned and we are not attributing it to the artist. An artisan-made homage or period work in that spirit, and a little more unusual because of the use of copper rather than the more commonly seen metal examples.

Mounted on its original simple rod and wood block base. Lots of hand-worked details, visible welds and irregularities—all part of the sculpture and exactly what gives it its character.

Recently acquired from a South Florida estate. A rare, slightly quirky piece that looks great on a console, pedestal or bookshelf and works particularly well in a modern, Brutalist or eclectic interior.
