Vintage framed reproduction of Pieter Bruegel the Elder's celebrated 1565 painting Haymaking, also known as The Hay Harvest. The richly detailed Flemish landscape depicts villagers cutting and gathering hay, figures carrying baskets of produce, a horse and rider, distant farms, dramatic rock formations, and a winding river valley. The original painting belongs to Bruegel's famous series depicting the seasons and months of the year.
Presented in its wonderfully period wooden frame with an undulating carved profile, warm walnut-toned finish, and narrow gold inner border. The combination gives the Renaissance image a distinctly mid-century presentation that has considerable decorative appeal of its own.
Original backing is stamped “SM259. Breughel: Haymaking, 12 x 16.” Likely dating to approximately the early 1960s.
