An attractive gilt-framed reproduction of one of the most celebrated early-17th-century double-hemisphere world maps, originally designed and engraved by the Flemish cartographer and engraver Jodocus Hondius (1563–1612) of Ghent. The map presents the Western and Eastern hemispheres side by side within elaborately decorated circular borders, capturing the geographical knowledge of the Age of Discovery.
California is shown as an island, a large southern continent (Terra Australis Incognita) appears, and the outlines of the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia reflect the cartographic understanding of the period. Rich decorative borders surround the hemispheres, filled with portraits of famous explorers and geographers (including Hondius himself in some states), allegorical figures representing the continents or the elements, sailing ships, sea monsters, and ornate cartouches.
The present example has been printed with an intentionally aged, sepia-toned appearance to evoke the look of an original hand-colored engraving. A modern English explanatory text panel has been added along the lower margin, providing biographical information on Jodocus Hondius, his move to Amsterdam, and his important role in the Dutch golden age of cartography.
The map is presented in an ornate gold-tone wooden frame with a textured fabric mat/liner, giving it a traditional and elegant presentation suitable for display.
