The door features a reverse-painted glass panel in bold red, green, and gold lettering advertising Rand McNally & Co's Indexed Pocket Maps. Inside, the cabinet retains its original compartmentalized shelving, designed to neatly separate and present folded maps for customers.

Rand McNally, founded in Chicago in 1856, was the preeminent American publisher of maps and atlases, supplying railroads, schools, and retailers across the nation. Cabinets such as this were used in general stores, bookshops, and railway stations from the late 19th to early 20th century to promote and organize Rand McNally's popular travel aids.

The piece is constructed from oak with a scalloped base, brass latch, and divided interior cubbies.
