these engravings originate from: ‘oeuvres completes de buffon.’ published in paris by garnier freres in 1853.
author: georges-louis le clerc, comte de buffon (september 7, 1707 – april 16, 1788). French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon’s views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including jean-baptiste lamarck and charles darwin.
the hand coloured engravings are by oudet after edouard travies (1809-c1868) the detailed precision of edouard travies’ work places him with the best of france’s scientific artists. His bird drawings are considered to be some of the finest ever produced.

the condition is good, commensurate with age. There is some foxing on the prints and the inside of the glass needs cleaning, i leave this to the buyer as i do not want to break the back binding of the framing.

the frames are quite rustic, with a gold overlay to a red base. There are some scratches and the corners have seen some damage. Please look closely at all photos.
