A striking vintage Royal Orchid Stoneware coffee service in a rich burgundy/wine glaze, featuring a sculptural ribbed form and wonderfully geometric mid-century/postmodern-inspired silhouette.
This set is especially noteworthy for its remarkable resemblance to the highly collectible 1980s Italian ceramic designs associated with Massimo Iosa Ghini for Naj Oleari. The tall, undulating body, vertical ribbed detailing, angular squared handles, curved spouts, and sculptural proportions are remarkably similar to that iconic design language. This piece is stamped Royal Orchid Stoneware and is not being represented as a Naj Oleari or Massimo Iosa Ghini piece. Rather, its visual similarity is part of what makes this set such a fascinating vintage find.
The set includes:
One tall coffee/tea pot with fitted lid
One creamer
Three matching cups
The deep burgundy glaze is beautifully contrasted by the exposed cream-colored stoneware around the rims, giving the pieces a particularly graphic look.
A wonderful statement set for a collector of vintage ceramics, postmodern tableware, Memphis-inspired design, or sculptural 1970s–1980s kitchenware.
