The animal, lying peacefully at … Read more RARE representation of a reclining greyhound, elegantly and naturalistically modelled and decorated in polychrome enamels. The animal, lying peacefully at full length, rests upon a rectangular base painted to imitate pink-veined marble and bordered with gilt moulding.

The dog’s coat is finely rendered in subtle shades of brown, black and grey, emphasising the contours of the body and the breed’s characteristic anatomical refinement. The details of the muzzle, eyes and ears are strikingly realistic.

This type of animal subject, particularly fashionable during the Empire and Restoration periods, frequently adorned mantelpieces and collectors’ display cabinets in sophisticated interiors.

Such pieces are now rare and rank among the most sought-after animal figures produced by the Paris porcelain manufactories during the early 19th century.

During the early 19th century, the greyhound became a symbol of refinement and elegance, perfectly suited to the Neoclassical aesthetics of the Empire and Restoration periods. Its slender, graceful silhouette evoked the ideals of classical antiquity that were so highly prized in the decorative arts.

Traditionally associated with the nobility, the greyhound retained its image as a courtly dog and companion of the elite. Depicted in paintings, sculptures, porcelain figures and clocks, it became a highly fashionable decorative subject.
