Box Calf is the oldest leather in the house, in continuous use since the 1890s and named for Joseph Box, the nineteenth-century English shoemaker associated with the tannage. It is smooth, semi-glossy, and boardy in the hand — rigid enough that a Kelly built in it holds its lines without help from anything else.
It is also the leather that changes most with use. Box takes a patina: the tone deepens where the bag is handled, corners darken, fine scratches burnish back under a finger. Collectors who choose Box over a grained leather are choosing that trajectory on purpose and accepting that the surface records everything along the way.
In Noir the semi-gloss is at its most pronounced — under direct light the panels read almost lacquered, which is what separates a Box Kelly from a Togo one across a room.
Blind stamp [L] (2008). In excellent condition, with its original dust bag. Authenticated in-house.
