At 25cm the whole mechanism survives the reduction — sangles across the front, the touret turning against the plate, the clochette hanging from the handle — worked down to a scale that carries an evening as readily as a day.

The exterior is Togo, the pebbled calfskin Hermès introduced in 1997 and now uses more than any other on this bag. Its raised grain and fine veining resist scratching and light water, it holds shape without stiffening, and it is light for its substance, which matters more on a small bag than most people expect. Etoupe sits between grey and brown and moves between the two with the light — the reason it holds a permanent place while brighter colours rotate through.
Palladium hardware, a platinum-group metal that stays cool silver and does not tarnish, keeps the whole thing quiet.
