Two women in traditional dress sit facing one another in quiet conversation, modeled in the smooth, simplified volumes that define Castañeda's mature style. Multi-figure compositions are scarce in his body of work, which centers almost entirely on the single female figure, making this an uncommon piece for collectors of Mexican modernist sculpture.

Castañeda trained at La Esmeralda in Mexico City and worked as studio assistant to Francisco Zúñiga, the master of twentieth century Mexican figurative sculpture. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museo de Arte e Historia in Ciudad Juárez, and was represented for decades by B. Lewin Galleries of Palm Springs, the leading American dealer in Mexican modernism.

The bronze is crisply incised in the drapery "F. Castañeda 1982 II/VII" and retains its original ebonized wood plinth. A fine naturalistic touch: the toes of one figure extend just past the edge of the base. See less
