Each chair is constructed from solid teak and fitted with woven cane across the seat and backrest. The warm tone and visible grain of the teak create a natural contrast with the lighter character of the cane.

The PJ-SI-25-A is recognised by its armless profile and distinctive asymmetrical compass-leg construction. The model was developed for students at Panjab University as part of the extensive furniture programme created for Chandigarh. Its minimalistic construction, durable materials and compact proportions reflect the practical requirements of the commission while retaining the strong structural language associated with Jeanneret’s work.

Pierre Jeanneret (1896-1967) is recognised as a pivotal figure in modernism. His collaborations with his cousin Le Corbusier are especially significant, particularly their codification of modernist architectural principles in Five Points Towards a New Architecture (1926). Towards the end of their careers the pair also designed a utopian modernist city in India – Chandigarh, and Jeanneret designed some of his most celebrated furniture designs for the administrative buildings in the city.
