Italy, 1960s origin italy period 1960s author alfonso grassi (solofra, 1918 – salerno, 2002) was a famous italian figurative painter. Trained at the academy of fine arts in naples with masters such as caprile and notte, he was a favorite pupil and friend of giorgio de chirico. Known for his mastery of chiaroscuro and for his practice of painting by candlelight, he is famous both for his intense portraits of elderly people and common people, and for his official portraits of great personalities such as pope john paul ii, sandro pertini and de chirico himself. He lived and worked for a long time in salerno, where today an academy named after him preserves his memory.
