A study in circles, colour and reflection, this wall mirror by marcello and marco de carli turns a functional object into a graphic composition. Produced by cristal art in italy around 1970, its layered glass construction places it firmly within the experimental approach to mirrors found in post-war italian design. Comparable examples by the designers for cristal art are documented with coloured and mirrored glass elements arranged concentrically.
the mirror is built around a central circular plate, surrounded by a dark band and a narrow lighter border. A much broader outer ring of coloured glass completes the composition. Rather than using a conventional frame, marcello and marco de carli treat glass itself as the framing material, creating a sequence of concentric surfaces that changes according to viewpoint and light.
most intriguing is the outer glass. Under the warm studio lighting shown here it takes on an olive-green tone, yet its appearance is far less fixed in person. Different surroundings and lighting conditions shift the surface towards cooler blue-grey or more metallic hues. Reflections across the glass further alter its colour, giving the mirror a different character throughout the day.
a slim dark backing is visible around the perimeter and gives depth to an otherwise restrained profile. The layered construction also creates subtle shadows between the central mirror and outer glass, reinforcing the circular geometry without added ornament.
seen frontally, the mirror reads almost as an abstract geometric artwork. From an angle, its layered construction and changing reflections become more apparent. It works particularly well above a console, in an entrance hall or as a graphic element within a restrained interior.
the mirror is in excellent vintage condition, with only very minor signs of use consistent with its age. The glass surfaces and layered elements are exceptionally well preserved, retaining their clarity and visual depth. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,

or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
