This vintage 8x10 Moroccan Tuareg rug, handwoven in reed and leather circa 1950–1959, showcases striking tribal geometry in beige, black, and brick red. A rare decorative piece reflecting the rich nomadic weaving traditions of the Sahara.
On the Design:
Rooted in the artistic traditions of the Tuareg people of the Sahara, this vintage Moroccan rug presents a striking interpretation of tribal geometry through natural reed and leather. The spacious beige field is anchored by bold cruciform emblems and stacked lozenge motifs, each arranged with careful symmetry to create a quiet sense of order. Smaller angular symbols and framed diamond devices surround the central elements, reflecting the symbolic vocabulary long associated with Tuareg craftsmanship and the visual language of nomadic life.
The restrained palette of warm beige is enriched by accents of black and brick red, allowing the geometric motifs to stand out with remarkable clarity. Unlike densely ornamented Oriental carpets, Tuareg rugs celebrate openness and balance, where negative space becomes as meaningful as the motifs themselves. The uncommon combination of woven reed and leather lends the surface a distinctive texture, making this piece a compelling example of Moroccan desert artistry and an enduring expression of indigenous design heritage. The accompanying book, Charlotte Perriand: Complete Works Interiors by Jacques Barsac, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B237) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
