Vintage 1970s Mediterranean Textured Ceramic Tripod Urn Lamp With Linen Drum Shade
A striking vintage statement lamp combining sculptural textured ceramic, elaborate pierced metalwork, and an unusual architectural tripod form, newly updated with a crisp 18-inch linen drum shade. Dating approximately to the late 1960s–1970s, this distinctive lamp bridges Mid-Century Mediterranean design with a lighter, more versatile designer aesthetic.
At the center of the lamp is an elongated warm ivory/beige textured ceramic urn dramatically suspended within a tall three-legged metal framework. Unlike a conventional table lamp whose body rests directly upon a base, the ceramic urn appears to float within the tripod, tapering gracefully downward to a softly rounded point with open space beneath. This unusual suspended construction gives the lamp an exceptionally sculptural and architectural presence.
Encircling the broad upper portion of the ceramic urn is an elaborate pierced metal gallery featuring scrolling foliage and floral/acanthus-inspired ornament. The gallery is a separate dimensional metal element surrounding the ceramic, allowing the pale textured surface to remain visible through the intricate openwork. The contrast between the light ceramic and dark metal creates wonderful depth and emphasizes the lamp’s unusual construction.
The three-legged framework, pierced decorative gallery, and circular lower stretcher have been carefully refinished in a deep oil-rubbed bronze finish. The dark bronze treatment unifies the metal components while allowing subtle warmth to remain in the finish, providing a sophisticated contrast against the neutral ceramic.
The tripod itself measures approximately 15 inches high, approximately 8 inches across at the upper section and 11 inches across the feet. Its three gently flared legs surround the suspended urn and are joined near the bottom by an open circular metal stretcher, creating a light and airy base despite the lamp’s substantial scale.
Above the textured ceramic body is a sculpted upper cap and neck in a subtly deeper warm beige/taupe tone. The smoother finish of this upper section provides a handsome tonal transition between the highly textured ceramic urn and the shade while preserving the lamp’s original vintage character.
For this presentation, the lamp has been paired with a new 18-inch linen drum shade. The clean cylindrical silhouette provides a sophisticated counterpoint to the ornate vintage base, while the natural linen texture complements the warm ivory and beige tones of the ceramic. When illuminated, the linen gently diffuses the light and produces a soft, warm glow that beautifully reveals the dimensional texture of the urn and pierced metalwork.
The lamp retains its substantial 1½-inch spherical ball finial, refinished in coordinating oil-rubbed bronze. An 8-inch harp supports the shade, and the lamp is fitted with a three-way socket switch for adjustable illumination with an appropriate three-way bulb.
The lamp also retains its original amber-colored electrical cord. The cord is cleverly routed internally through the lamp’s structure and exits discreetly near the very bottom of one tripod leg, maintaining a particularly clean presentation.
With the linen drum shade installed, the lamp measures approximately 32 inches high × 18 inches wide × 18 inches deep, giving it substantial presence without an overly large footprint. Its scale makes it particularly effective on a generous nightstand, living-room side table, console, library table, or entry table.
What makes this lamp especially compelling is its combination of texture, ornament, geometry, and negative space. The suspended ceramic urn, open tripod framework, circular stretcher, and pierced floral gallery create a silhouette unlike that of a conventional ceramic table lamp. The new linen shade softens the composition and gives the vintage base a fresh, sophisticated presentation suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
A distinctive example of late Mid-Century decorator lighting, this lamp would work beautifully in Mediterranean, Transitional, Organic Modern, Hollywood Regency, Eclectic, Traditional, Spanish Revival, and collected designer interiors.
