An exceptionally handsome circa 1930 slant-front secretary desk by the North-Western Cabinet Company of Burlington, Iowa, retaining its original North-Western “Master-Craft Furniture” maker’s label. Founded in 1899, North-Western became a major American manufacturer of desks and finely made case furniture during the early 20th century.

This compact secretary combines the storage of a traditional writing bureau with the open kneehole form of a pedestal desk. The slant front lowers to create a generous writing surface, revealing a fitted interior with ten vertical pigeonhole compartments, two small upper cubbies, a central interior drawer, and additional open storage below. Beneath the writing compartment is a full-width drawer, while a pair of paneled lower doors open to two tall enclosed storage compartments.

Architecturally, the piece reflects Colonial Revival furniture of the late 1920s and early 1930s, with additional Jacobean and William-and-Mary-inspired details. Four turned and fluted front legs support the pedestal cabinets, while paneled doors are embellished with turned pendant ornaments and small applied bosses. The scalloped kneehole apron, molded drawer front, ring pulls, and restrained linear moldings give the desk a formal but not overly ornate appearance.

The broad fall front is finished with a distinctive geometric diamond-shaped veneered motif, centered by small applied roundels. Warm dark mahogany-toned surfaces and figured wood veneers provide rich color and depth throughout. North-Western produced furniture in a variety of woods and finishes during this period; because the exact factory wood specification for this example has not been established, it is described conservatively as mahogany-finished wood with decorative veneers rather than represented as solid mahogany.

Its compact proportions make it especially useful today. At only 36 inches wide and 14.5 inches deep when closed, it occupies relatively little floor space while still opening to a substantial work surface. The open center allows for a chair, making it a genuinely functional writing desk rather than simply a decorative case piece.
