Large hand-painted tin trade sign advertising fixtures installed by The Butchers Products Co. Bold red and black lettering fills the weathered cream-colored field, surrounded by a dark green painted border. The surviving text includes the company name, a Peoria and Fulton Streets address, telephone number “Haymarket 4400,” and partially legible wording promoting “modern, quick-service” equipment. Numerous perimeter holes indicate the sign was originally mounted directly to a building or commercial interior. Its unusually large scale, strong typography, and extensively aged surface give it a compelling piece of found industrial artwork connected to Chicago’s historic meatpacking trade.
The Butchers Products Co. operated in Chicago’s Fulton Market district as a supplier and installer of fixtures for butcher shops and other businesses serving the city’s thriving meat trade.
