A wonderfully weathered antique ornamental iron garden gate with exceptional architectural character, believed to date to the early 20th century. This was removed from a 150 year old home near downtown Indianapolis
Measuring approximately 54 inches high by 36 inches wide, the gate features an elaborate combination of hand-worked and manufactured iron elements, including graceful scrolling forms, diamond latticework, twisted wire details, repeating Gothic-inspired arches, decorative leaf accents, and an ornate crest.
At the center of the upper crest is an original embossed manufacturer’s medallion. Although extensive oxidation has obscured the manufacturer’s name, the lower portion of the plaque remains identifiable as “TERRE HAUTE, IND.” Terre Haute, Indiana was home to manufacturers of ornamental lawn fencing, gates, and architectural ironwork during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The gate also retains its original riveted latch hardware. The unusual push-operated latch mechanism remains movable; however, the gate is no longer installed with its original post and corresponding hardware, so its complete operation cannot be tested.
Perhaps its most beautiful feature is the naturally developed rusted iron patina. Decades of outdoor exposure have produced rich variations of warm rust, brown, and dark iron across the surface. The finish has intentionally been left untouched to preserve the gate’s age and character.
A striking piece of American garden architecture that could be displayed as a functional garden gate with appropriate installation, incorporated into a garden wall or fence, or used decoratively as an architectural panel or climbing support for roses, clematis, ivy, or other vines.
Especially suited to an English cottage garden, French country landscape, historic home, conservatory, courtyard, or romantic garden setting.
