Two complete, intact of vintage Masonic books editions, each featuring incisive histories and unique features designed specifically for Masonic members. They are an oversized book pair, weighing over 12 lbs together; each is in excellent condition and fits well in a Dark Academia & Traditional, Grandmillennial & Maximalism style presentations.
Book One: A 1951 Hertel Masonic Family Bible, with no writing on the entry pages, is an oversized edition with gilt page edges and is seemingly untouched, with little sign of use. The illustrated Family Edition Holy Bible has blue, semi-soft, cleanable covers and binding. There is no writing, tears, stains, or creases throughout. This exceptionally fine example includes valuable, memorable, and written histories on many facets of Masonry, and is specific to United States history, reflecting Masonic rites and beliefs. The Bible's pristine condition makes it an important item for collectors and those interested in fraternal organizations such as Freemasonry.
Book Two: Published in 1898, Fifty Years Of Masonry In California Volume II, written by Edwin A. Sherman, is a primary source antiquarian resource to information specific to this subject found nowhere else. It is a documentary of great archival significance, tracing the historical establishment and progress of California Masonic lodges and their members, filled with images and their development. In its original two-volume form, it spans fifty years, with volume two tracing the origins of Freemasonry in California and exploring its many founding members, lodges, and chapters. The author adds detail with key events, recording examples of established California Subordinate Lodges and Chapters. It also includes a section on a widowed Women’s Home and Orphanage, and expansive sections on the origins of the Royal Arch Masonry Cryptic Rite of Royal and Select Masters; also, the origins of the Ancient Knighthood and the Crusades; the Knights Templar in California; and much more. The book, in a big way, fulfills its destiny: a timeline of American presidents and notable citizens; it highlights fascinating anecdotes and pioneer stories, including members' reminiscences of adventures and first arrivals in California. It is a valuable genealogical resource for anyone interested in the social history of California Freemasonry, with stories of immigrants settling in California, moving from Europe and Canada, and contributing to the cultural historical perspective of the latter half of the 19th Century. Some participated in the Mexican War and the period following the 1849 California Gold Rush and California's statehood in 1850.
