c. 1880s - 1890s (Pat. May 28, 1889); Bernard Gloekler Co. - Pittsburgh
Massive forged iron butcher's wall rack by the Bernard Gloekler Co., stamped with the firm's 1889 patent date. This two-tier system features twenty integrated hanging hooks, ornate scrolled brackets, and decorative cast figures including a bull's head and steer finial above crossed cleavers - an iconic mark of early American meat industry. Gloekler was among the nation's premier producers of butchers' and abattoir equipment from the late 19th to early 20th century, known for marrying practical engineering with ornamental trade signage.
The Bernard Gloekler Co. began in 1875 in Pittsburgh when Bernard Gloekler, an immigrant from Germany, took over a butcher supply business and started manufacturing industrial kitchen equipment. The company, which began with Gloekler's mechanical skills, expanded to make equipment for restaurants, hotels, and cold storage. After his death in 1911, his son Charles took over the company.
