Grand Tour Neoclassical Lion & Fluted Column Table Lamp, Gilt Wood
A finely carved Grand Tour inspired table lamp, executed in solid wood and designed in the Neoclassical tradition. This sculptural piece combines architectural form with decorative symbolism, centred around a fluted Doric column flanked by two recumbent lions and raised on a refined octagonal plinth base.
The composition is richly detailed and carefully balanced, reflecting the classical design language popularised during the Regency and Empire periods. The lions are particularly well modelled, with expressive facial detail and naturalistic muscular definition achieved through skilled hand carving.
The lamp is finished in hand-applied gilt wood with a deliberately aged patina, combined with a faux porphyry painted base that evokes the appearance of classical stone. This contrast of textures enhances its architectural presence and reinforces its historical character.
When illuminated, the piece offers both sculptural impact and warm ambient lighting, making it ideal as a statement table lamp for refined interiors.
Solid hand-carved wood with gilt finish and faux porphyry painted base.
The carving is fully hand-executed, with fine detailing throughout the lions, fluted column and architectural base. The surface finish has been carefully aged to replicate the appearance of a well-preserved antique Grand Tour object.

Shade Compatibility
Designed to pair with a Shackleton Fox medium lampshade.
Inspired by 19th-century Grand Tour collecting traditions, this design reflects the European fascination with classical antiquity and Roman architectural forms.
The fluted column references ancient Doric design, while the lion motif symbolises strength, guardianship and nobility—common themes in Regency and Empire decorative arts. Together, these elements were widely used in scholarly and aristocratic interiors as symbols of cultured taste and classical knowledge.
Wood-carved lighting of this type follows the tradition of fine European cabinetmaking, where furniture and decorative objects were treated as architectural extensions of the interior space.
Condition
Excellent decorative condition.
The carved wooden structure is sound and stable, with no splits, shrinkage or structural issues. The gilt finish and faux porphyry base have been professionally aged to create a consistent and intentional antique patina.
All electrical components are modern and have been fully rewired and safety tested to current standards.
The lampshade shown is available separately from Shackleton Fox. This piece is photographed with a medium shade (17.5 cm top x 23 cm height x 35 cm base), selected to suit its proportions.
