A set of three "Arkipelago" candleholders designed by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, Finland, around 1980.
Cast in clear glass with a deliberately rough, fractured surface and air bubbles trapped in the mass, each block looks like a piece of broken pack ice with a candle cup melted into the top. The three graduate in height and mix square and triangular sections, so grouped together they read as a small landscape rather than as a matching set.Two smaller blocks and one tall, mixing square and triangular sections.
One holder retains its original "iittala Finland" foil label.
Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) won the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in both 1956 and 1957, received Finland's Pro Finlandia Medal, and taught at the Royal College of Art in London. Arkipelago is among the most recognisable of his later series for Iittala. This piece has an attribution mark,
