A set of three "Arkipelago" candleholders designed by Timo Sarpaneva for Iittala, Finland, around 1980.
Cast in clear glass with a deliberately rough, fractured surface and air bubbles trapped in the mass, each block looks like a piece of broken pack ice with a candle cup melted into the top. The three graduate in height and mix square and triangular sections, so grouped together they read as a small landscape rather than as a matching set. Two smaller blocks and one tall, mixing square and triangular sections.
One holder retains its original "iittala Finland" foil label.
Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) took the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale twice, in 1954 and 1957. He was made an Honorary Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Arts in London in 1963 and an Honorary Doctor of the Royal College of Art in 1967. Arkipelago, designed in 1978, is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
