This elegant settee is an outstanding example of the progressive bentwood furniture produced in vienna around the turn of the 20th century and reflects the transition toward the refined modernist vocabulary associated with the vienna secession and wiener jugendstil. Constructed from bent beechwood, the design is distinguished by its exceptionally fluid framework. The continuous sweeping lines of the back and armrests are complemented by elegant curved supports beneath the seat, producing a sophisticated balance between structural economy and decorative expression. Gustav siegel was among the important designers associated with jacob & josef kohn during this transformative period in viennese furniture design. Model 715/c, designed in 1899, demonstrates the combination of industrial bentwood production and increasingly modern architectural form that characterized the company’s most advanced work around 1900.
