An important early 20th-century austrian bentwood settee, model 715/c, designed by gustav siegel in 1899 and manufactured by jacob & josef kohn, vienna, circa 1901. This elegant settee is an outstanding example of the progressive bentwood furniture produced in vienna around the turn of the 20th century and reflects the transition toward the refined modernist vocabulary associated with the vienna secession and wiener jugendstil. Constructed from bent beechwood, the design is distinguished by its exceptionally fluid framework. The continuous sweeping lines of the back and armrests are complemented by elegant curved supports beneath the seat, producing a sophisticated balance between structural economy and decorative expression. Gustav siegel was among the important designers associated with jacob & josef kohn during this transformative period in viennese furniture design. Model 715/c, designed in 1899, demonstrates the combination of industrial bentwood production and increasingly modern architectural form that characterized the company’s most advanced work around 1900. The piece retains its original jacob & josef kohn wien manufacturer’s label, supporting its authenticity and historical provenance. The bentwood frame has been carefully refurbished while preserving its original character and age-related patina. Minor traces of use and age remain appropriate to a piece dating from circa 1901. The original period springs and traditional upholstery padding have been retained and are included, offering valuable documentation of the settee’s historic construction. The existing upholstery has been removed and the piece is offered ready for professional reupholstery in a textile selected by the new owner or interior designer.
