This is an original work by contemporary French painter Maryline Beauplet-Dornic (b. 1980, Le Mans), currently living and working near Rouen. Beauplet-Dornic studied art history and earned a Master’s degree in Art focused on painting, and has been exhibiting her work regularly in France since the early 2000s. Her influences include artists known for challenging the nature of painting itself, such as Gerhard Richter, Robert Ryman, Vera Molnar, and Bernard Frize.
This painting belongs to her “Cross II” series, in which she layers paint with knives and brushes over a metallic grid framework. The technique creates a push-and-pull between visibility and concealment — vivid patches of color (here in reds, greens, yellows, blues, and oranges) emerge through and around a woven white grid structure, set against a deep blue ground that fades to lighter tones at the edges. The result reads almost like a cellular or satellite-map composition, inviting close viewing to trace where color is fully revealed versus filtered through the grid. See less
