A wonderful piece of American presidential history: an official 1979 White House Christmas gift print issued during the administration of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter.
The print reproduces The President’s House, Washington, an 1860 watercolor by British artist Lefevre James Cranstone, depicting the White House and its South Lawn during the 19th century. The original watercolor became part of the White House collection. For the 1979 holiday season, Rosalynn Carter selected Cranstone’s historic White House view for the family’s official Christmas imagery. American Greetings produced a special edition of 7,000 larger Christmas gift prints for presentation to White House staff. This example bears the printed signatures of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter beneath the image and remains presented in its vintage cream mat and gold-tone frame.
An appealing collectible at the intersection of American history, presidential memorabilia, White House history and vintage Washington, D.C. decor.
Provenance: From the estate collection of a former White House correspondent who served during the Carter administration. The print bears the signatures of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Signatures have not been independently authenticated. This piece was acquired together with other presidential White House Christmas gift prints retained by the correspondent during her career covering the White House as part of a small collection of presidential White House Christmas memorabilia acquired from the estate, including examples from multiple presidential administrations as you can see listed in our sop.
