THE WILLIAM LEWIN WATERBIRDS & WADERS COLLECTION
A carefully curated collection of fine-art ornithological prints featuring waterbirds and wading birds drawn from the remarkable 18th-century illustrations of English naturalist and artist William Lewin (1747–1795)
Lewin was among the pioneering natural-history artists of his period, admired for the delicacy, precision and distinctive character of his hand-colored bird illustrations. This collection brings together a selection of his elegant waterbirds and waders, newly presented for contemporary interiors while preserving the beauty and integrity of Lewin’s original bird imagery.
Rather than simply reproducing the historical plates in their existing archival form, each bird illustration has been carefully isolated and thoughtfully re-composed against a newly designed soft duck-egg blue ground. The muted blue-green tone was selected to subtly evoke water, marshland and the natural habitats associated with these species while creating a calm, sophisticated backdrop for the collection.
A restrained antique-gold border, delicate classical detailing and museum-inspired typography complete the composition, giving each work the appearance of a collected natural-history plate while allowing Lewin’s original illustration to remain the focal point.
The bird itself is intentionally preserved in its historical character; the surrounding color field, composition, typography and presentation have been newly designed to create a cohesive decorative series suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Each plate includes the bird’s common name, its scientific name, and an attribution to William Lewin.
Technique & Production:
Digitally restored and newly composed from an original public-domain 18th-century William Lewin natural-history illustration.
This is a newly produced fine-art print and not an original 18th-century engraving or antique print.
Professionally printed in the United States by specialist fine-art printing partners using premium-quality archival or fine-art paper selected for its surface, tonal quality and ability to reproduce the delicate linework and subtle coloration of Lewin’s original illustrations.
Paper Asset:
Museum-Grade Hahnemühle German Etching (310 gsm). A heavyweight, 100% cotton mold-made rag featuring a distinct, velvety felt texture. This premium, textured surface scatters light beautifully and perfectly replicates the organic weight, tooth, and tactile luxury of hand-pressed historical watercolor parchment.
The collection’s signature soft duck-egg background and understated antique-gold detailing have been intentionally developed to complement the historic artwork without artificially distressing or aging the image.
The result combines the charm and character of an important historical natural-history illustration with the cleaner scale, balance and presentation of a contemporary collectible art print.
Designed as a coordinated series, the Waterbirds & Waders Collection can be displayed individually, in pairs or smaller groupings, or assembled into a larger statement gallery wall. The consistent duck-egg palette and classical presentation allow different species within the collection to sit together naturally while retaining the individual character of each bird.
