Hieu” at the lower right and attributed to Vietnamese artist Trần Quang Hiếu (1938–1985).

The composition draws the viewer directly into the heart of the village. Steeply pitched roofs, weathered facades, narrow balconies, supporting pilings, utility poles, and delicately rendered overhead wires converge around a luminous central waterway. A solitary boatman navigating the canal provides both scale and a compelling human focal point.

The artist combines architectural precision with expressive, heavily textured paint application. Broad palette-knife passages build the sunlit walls, corrugated roofs, reflections, and shadowed recesses into an almost sculptural surface. Fine linear details defining the railings, pilings, electrical wires, and boat create a dynamic counterpoint to the thicker impasto. The sophisticated palette incorporates pale blue, ivory, charcoal, ochre, muted turquoise, rust, umber, and touches of gold, producing an atmospheric balance of light, texture, and depth.

Darker coloration within the recessed bamboo details is part of the frame’s intentional antiqued finish rather than damage.
