A small carved and weathered sandstone Buddha head in tan-brown tones with darker mineral staining, downcast, meditative eyes, straight chipped nose, faint arched brows, closed lips with a serene expression, hair rendered in tight curls rising to a tall stepped ushnisha (head-top protuberance which in some literature is said to represent a “crown”), top edge chipped and irregular. The statute is fitted onto the base with a slender metal rod that anchors it to a black rectangular plinth for display. No maker’s mark.
Provenance: This piece is from the collection of David and Laura Finn. David Finn was the co-founder of the famed public-relations firm Ruder Finn and a renowned photographer. Over the course of half a century, the couple amassed an impressive collection of modern sculptures, which Sotheby’s represented in its May 2017 sale of Impressionist & Modern Art. This small piece was subsequently represented by a different auction house.
