This original wardrobe by Rudolf Vichr dates from the early 1930s and represents a characteristic example of Classical Modernism in Czechoslovakia. Manufactured in Prague by Vichr A. Spol., it reflects the design culture of the interwar period, where functional clarity and a defined visual order became central aspects of furniture making.
The exterior pairs a calm reseda-green surface with a chromed metal frame, emphasising the constructive logic of the piece. The distinctive door handles act as the compositional centre — sculptural, symmetrical and intentionally avant-garde in their presence. They extend the purely functional purpose of a handle into a subtle architectural gesture.
Inside, the same structural logic continues. Warm wooden surfaces, a clothes rail and a storage shelf underline the practical orientation of the furniture while maintaining a crafted quality.
The original painted finish has been preserved, giving the wardrobe an authentic historical character. Surfaces and materials show traces consistent with more than nine decades of use and contribute to its historical depth rather than diminishing it.
Furniture by Rudolf Vichr is regarded today as an important chapter in Czechoslovak design history, documenting the transition from artisanal production to industrial furniture manufacturing — a defining concern of European Modernism. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
