Designed by Jean-Pierre Vitrac for Co&Co in 1970s France, the Lucinelle lamp is an imaginative example of the period's playful approach to plastic, colour and interactive design.
Inspired by the form of a ladybug, the lamp features a glossy red plastic body decorated with oversized black spots. Its two wings can be moved independently around a white central diffuser, allowing both the shape of the object and the distribution of light to change according to their position.
This movable construction is central to Vitrac's design. with its wings closed, Lucinelle appears almost as a small sculptural creature. As they open, the illuminated white dome gradually emerges between the red shells. Light therefore becomes part of the transformation rather than simply the function contained within it.
The lamp reflects the experimental character of French design during the 1970s, when new plastic materials encouraged designers to explore organic shapes, strong colours and a more playful relationship between people and everyday objects. Its zoomorphic form gives Lucinelle an unmistakable identity, while the simple construction keeps the design visually coherent.
Conceived for use both as a wall lamp and as a table lamp, Lucinelle is also unusually versatile. Its compact dimensions and movable wings allow it to function as practical lighting while retaining the character of a decorative design object.
This example is fully functional and presented in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of age consistent with careful use.
