The "smed" wardrobe was designed by rutger andersson in 1978 and has been part of the ikea collection since 1986. This functional wardrobe, made of chrome-plated steel tubing, originated in the postmodern era of the 1980s, a time when ikea was fundamentally transforming its product range. "smed" was andersson's first design for ikea.
the wardrobe reflects ikea's evolution towards a modern and youthful living concept during the 1980s and 1990s. During this period, ikea increasingly moved away from traditional furniture and drew more inspiration from italian design and pop culture.
its distinctive feature is its unusual, cactus-like shape. Andersson himself stated that a cactus inspired the design and that he was looking for a piece of furniture that could be packed flat and easily assembled. These qualities remain a hallmark of ikea to this day.
the clothes rack is made of chrome-plated steel tubing. The design combines a three-legged tripod base with flexible hooks.
condition: the clothes rack is in good vintage condition with minor signs of wear accumulated over the years. There are some light scratches on the steel tubing.
