A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains is one of China's Ten Most Famous Masterpieces Handed Down Through Generations, the pinnacle of blue-green landscape painting, and a veritable "national treasure." Stretching nearly 12 meters in length, the painting was created by Wang Ximeng, a student at the Imperial Painting Academy of the Northern Song Dynasty, who completed this monumental work in about half a year when he was roughly eighteen years old.
Unrolled as a handscroll, the entire composition depicts rolling mountain ranges and vast, boundless rivers and lakes. Dotting the landscape are wilderness ferries and fishing villages, waterside pavilions and terraced towers, thatched cottages and plank roads, boats and bridges, as well as traveling figures and fishermen at work—each element placed according to the terrain and fully integrated with the mountains and waters, conveying both a grand natural majesty and a vivid sense of daily life.

Artistic Features
Blue-green coloring: Using mineral pigments such as azurite and malachite as the dominant palette, the colors are rich yet elegant, remaining bright and striking after a thousand years. It is a quintessential example of the "grand blue-green landscape" style.

Exquisite detail: The foot of mountains, walls of houses, and the meeting of water and sky are rendered with varying shades of ochre; rooftops are painted in deep black, while figures are mostly outlined in white. The brushwork and application of color are meticulous and refined.

Grand composition: Throughout the scroll, mountain ridges stretch endlessly and rivers flow on without bound. Employing scattered perspective, the scenery of a thousand li is gathered into a single scroll, possessing both sweeping momentum and clear layers of depth. See less
