A beautifully detailed 18th-century hand-colored engraving titled Cérémonie du Mariage des Incas (“Ceremony of the Marriage of the Incas”), Plate XI.
The engraving depicts an elaborate Inca marriage ceremony, with a large gathering of figures dressed in ceremonial garments, feathered headdresses and jewelry. Exceptionally fine engraved linework is enhanced by delicate hand coloring in muted shades of blue, green, rose, violet, ochre and gold.
The work is associated with the great 18th-century European tradition of illustrated travel publications documenting the peoples, ceremonies and customs of South America. The lower margin retains its original French title, along with the plate designation “Nº XI.”
Presented under glass with a wide aubergine mat, narrow gilt inner border and antiqued silver-tone frame. The sophisticated coloring and presentation make this a particularly decorative antique work on paper, ideal for a library, study, gallery wall or collection of historical engravings and Grand Tour imagery.
