The piece is tentatively dated … Read more A unique, hand-carved wooden hunting decoy duck, most likely originating from Northern or Central Europe.

The piece is tentatively dated to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, circa 1900–1920. The duck was handcrafted from wood, with a separately carved and attached head. Numerous traces of traditional chisel and plane work are visible, as well as remnants of the original, multi-layered polychrome finish.

The characteristic, wide, and flattened body, along with its construction, indicate that the object originally served as a practical hunting decoy intended to be placed on the water, rather than being crafted solely as a decorative sculpture.

The surface has retained a beautiful, natural patina resulting from age and use. There are visible signs of wear, losses in the paint layer, cracks in the wood, and traces of past repairs and wear. All these features are part of the object’s authentic character.

Of particular interest are the preserved fragments of paint on the wings, tail, and head, as well as the hand-carved details of the plumage.

This is a highly decorative and collectible example of vintage folk art / hunting decoy that will look great in a vintage, rustic, country, lodge, or eclectic interior.
