Constructed predominantly from timber … Read more A wonderfully characterful late Victorian four-wheel hand cart, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.

Constructed predominantly from timber and retaining layers of wonderfully timeworn green and blue-green paint, the cart stands on four traditional wooden spoked wheels, each constructed with segmented wooden felloes and fitted with an iron tyre. The wheels retain their aged painted finish, complemented by heavily patinated iron hubs and fittings.

The substantial boarded body is strengthened externally with distinctive geometric timber bracing, while the ends incorporate old iron reinforcement, chains and fittings. A particularly unusual feature is the tall T-shaped wooden handle, forming part of the cart's manually operated pulling and steering arrangement.

Originally made as a working utility cart, its exact occupational use is unknown. The construction is consistent with late 19th-century hand-drawn estate and utility carts, which were used for transporting goods and materials without the need for a horse.

Years of practical use have created an exceptional surface, with faded paint, exposed timber, oxidised ironwork and numerous marks and repairs contributing to its wonderfully authentic appearance.

Today it makes an extraordinary decorative object in its own right. Its generous proportions would make it particularly effective as a statement piece in a large hallway, garden room, orangery, retail interior or hospitality setting, while the open body offers considerable potential for creative display.
