An original colour woodcut with screenprint on paper by Dutch artist Frits van Roon (b. Curaçao, 1947), executed in 1995. The composition catches a fish surfacing through the broken shimmer of water — the title made literal, rendered in the flat planes and incised line native to the cut block, with the screen layer carrying the colour.

Signed and dated in pencil at lower right, titled "come to the surface" at lower left, and numbered 2/12 — one of only twelve impressions.

Van Roon trained in graphic arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam between 1966 and 1970 and is self-taught as a sculptor. Born on Curaçao and raised in rural Quebec before settling in the Netherlands in 1961, he has worked from Limburg for much of his career, exhibiting at Schunck in Heerlen and more recently in a solo presentation at Galerie Van Dam. Water, light, and the natural world recur throughout his graphic work — preoccupations he traces to a childhood spent on a river at the edge of the Canadian woods.

The sheet measures 34 × 50 cm and is presented in an open frame measuring 66.5 × 51.5 cm, unglazed, leaving the paper surface and the relief of the cut directly visible. In good condition, ready to hang. See less
