A beautifully atmospheric 1977 original watercolor attributed to Massachusetts artist Arthur Fox (1933–2019), depicting a quiet New England coastal village in winter.
Rendered in a restrained palette of soft blue-gray, cream, brown and charcoal tones, the scene features weathered waterfront buildings, overturned boats resting along a snowy shoreline, bare winter trees and calm water beyond. The accomplished watercolor technique gives the landscape a wonderful sense of place and period.
The work is signed “Arthur Fox” and dated 1977 at the lower left.
Particularly noteworthy is the surviving period gallery label on the reverse from Village Gallery of Art, “On The Green,” 34 South Road, Bedford, Massachusetts. The Massachusetts gallery provenance, signature, date, New England subject and stylistic characteristics support the attribution to Massachusetts/New England artist Arthur Fox.
Arthur Fox was a Massachusetts artist known for New England landscape painting. He exhibited throughout the Northeast and was associated with the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society and Brookline Arts Center.
Presented under glass with a warm neutral mat featuring a fine double-line border and a slender gold-tone frame. The understated period presentation complements the muted colors of the watercolor beautifully and gives the piece an elegant, collected-over-time character.
The watercolor itself presents very well under glass. The frame shows expected age-related wear, including scattered scuffs, surface marks and areas of finish loss, particularly along portions of the lower edge. The original paper backing has substantial age-related tearing, splitting and losses around the perimeter. It has intentionally been retained because it bears the original Village Gallery of Art, Bedford, Massachusetts label and contributes to the work’s provenance. Matting shows some age-related tonal variation.
Please review all photographs closely as they are considered part of the condition description.
The work has not been independently authenticated. Artist attribution is based upon the signature, date, surviving Massachusetts gallery provenance and available biographical and comparative research.
