According to the original informational label preserved on the reverse, Aisha was born at Brookfield Zoo on May 29, 1977. The image originated with a photograph taken when the young giraffe was only one week old, from which Evelyn Gross created the original watercolor. The watercolor was subsequently reproduced as this limited-edition lithograph.

The story behind Aisha’s name adds a wonderful piece of Chicago history to the work. Aisha was named through a public contest sponsored by the Chicago Tribune. The winning name was submitted by Robert Melhuish, whose prize reportedly included brand-new bicycles for his entire family.

The work bears the printed name Evelyn Gross at lower right as well as a handwritten inscription identifying the subjects as the baby giraffe and mother at Brookfield Zoo, Chicago. It is individually numbered 60/1000.

Presented under glass in a handsome vintage wood frame with layered warm brown and neutral matting. The original framing has a wonderfully period appearance and complements the soft, naturalistic palette of the artwork.

Beyond its decorative appeal, this piece offers an unusually specific provenance story connecting the artist, an individually identified Brookfield Zoo animal and Chicago history.
