These chairs have a wonderful sculptural quality. Their unusually tall proportions create a dramatic vertical silhouette, while the warm brown wood finish and handwoven rush seats lend an inviting Early American, Appalachian, farmhouse, and rustic character. Turned double front stretchers and side stretchers provide additional architectural detail.

The rush seats are woven in an attractive four-section envelope pattern and display the natural variations expected of traditional woven seating.

Provenance

Acquired from an estate in Knoxville, Tennessee. According to the previous owner, the chairs were made by a furniture maker whom the owner personally knew in or near Hickory, North Carolina—an area historically associated with American furniture manufacturing.

The previous owner also specifically stated that the chairs were constructed from an unusual or distinctive species of wood and identified the species at the time of purchase. Unfortunately, that information was not recorded and the specific wood species is now unknown. For accuracy, no attribution to a particular manufacturer or wood species is being made.The chairs were hand made specifically for the previous owner.

The chairs are therefore being offered as unattributed American-made vintage furniture, with the above history included as oral provenance from the estate.

A particularly appealing set for a farmhouse dining room, historic home, mountain retreat, kitchen table, or as statement accent chairs where their dramatic height can be appreciated.
