This delightful antique oil painting on board beautifully captures a serene moment in the countryside, rendered with a keen eye for both narrative and natural detail. Signed by F.W. Smith and dated January 1900, the work portrays a classic hunting scene where a poised white setter dog stands alert in the foreground, its gaze fixed intently ahead as it signals the presence of game. Behind the dog, a sportsman in traditional attire stands ready, his figure framed by a rustic stone wall and the delicate outlines of leafless trees, suggesting a late autumn or early winter setting.
Further into the distance, a cluster of thatched-roof cottages and outbuildings nestle quietly into the landscape, adding a sense of depth and pastoral charm to the composition. A flock of birds in flight and a small reflective pond introduce gentle movement to the tranquil scene, inviting the viewer to linger on each thoughtfully placed element.
F.W. Smith’s execution is marked by his careful attention to texture and mood. The dog’s coat is rendered with delicate, almost feathery brushwork, capturing both its soft fur and taut, focused stance. The surrounding foliage and weathered landscape are painted in rich, earthy tones, punctuated by the cool blue of the sky and water. Smith’s ability to convey atmosphere through subtle gradations of light and color gives the piece a warmth and immediacy that draws the viewer in.
Housed in its original ornate gold gesso frame, measuring 18 inches wide, 15 inches high, and 2.5 inches deep. Good antique condition with light surface wear, small losses to areas of the gesso frame. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
This painting is not only a collectible work of sporting art but also a striking decorative accent for a country-inspired interior. Its combination of historical charm, natural beauty, and storytelling makes it a standout addition to a study, hunting lodge, or any space celebrating rural tradition and leisure pursuits of a bygone era.
